From Mark Fast, Jason Wu and Jeremy Laing, to David Dixon, Smythe and Lida Baday, the names of Canadian designers can sound like a foreign language. Until now.

With the Royal tour upon us, the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton holds the power to transform the lives of our humble yet extraordinary creators.

Case in point - Andrea and Christie of Smythe. Kate covers up (for the Canadian cold?) in a blazer from their Les Vestes collection, and the label is now a trending topic on Twitter and making International headlines. I've chatted numerous times with these adorable and talented BFFs and all I can say is, "it's about time!" These classically tailored toppers have appeared on Blake Lively, Rachel McAdams and countless other Hollywood starlets so it's no wonder fashionable Kate opted for such a high-quality, perfectly crafted blazer. But that's where the 'puffery' ends for her first look in my opinion.

The $1076 price tag on the dark Roland Mouret dress is far from 'down to earth.' And although Kate appears classic, chic and regal (as expected), the overall ensemble veers too far toward dreary for a kick-off. I was hoping for more pomp and patriotism. Designer David Dixon's Spring 2011 collection featured, red, white and blue floral - a perfect mix of conservatism, Brit and Canadiana.

Perhaps throughout the next eight days we'll see her lighten up with some Grecian draping from Greta Constantine, lighter fare from Lida Baday or even some edge with our inspiring youthful designers, like Erdem. Kate’s 29 - perhaps she needs a little "Pippa" in her step.
